Confirmation

As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:16
Acts 8:14-15

After Jesus was baptized his Father sent the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove to show all this second sacrament (mystery), Confirmation.  It is in that order that the sacrament is administered at St. Bernadette.  First baptism and then Confirmation.  Jesus came to give us abundant life and a part of that abundant life is full initiation into the Christian life. As the Spirit of God descended upon Jesus after his baptism, God wants that same Spirit to descend upon all of his children.

On one occasion, while He was eating with them, He gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.  For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”  Acts 1:4-5

It is at this time Jesus tells us the gift of Confirmation comes from God as part of our Christian life.  This gift is part of our Christian initiation and through the Holy Spirit we are empowered us to continue to grow in our relationship with Jesus Christ and God our Father.

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.   Acts 1:1-4

By the sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed. – CCC 1285

Preparing for Confirmation

The Sacrament of Confirmation is available to any baptized person who participates in the Catholic faith or is part of becoming a Catholic.  The journey to Confirmation can begin as young as 3rd grade, if the student is baptized and has participated in Reconciliation (Confession with a Priest) but is not restricted to a certain age group.

Confirmation at St. Bernadette Parish

St. Bernadette’s curriculum teaches about both Confirmation and Eucharist in order for the student to receive both Sacraments at the same ceremony.  If a student has already received Eucharist, together we can determine appropriate curriculum once we receive your inquiry.  Please see our Learn page for more information on classes.  The time for preparing can be 1-2 years depending on current participation in the catholic faith.

St. Bernadette Parish would be happy to help you or your child become confirmed in the faith!   Please see the Learn page concerning Faith Formation and Sacrament preparation to prepare you to for the Sacrament of Confirmation, and please don’t hesitate to contact us to learn more!

In the Restored Order, Confirmation is the second sacrament of Initiation as it was the second mystery revealed to us in Jesus life.

As God has given us the gifts of Confirmation: wisdom, understanding, right judgment, courage, knowledge, reverence, and wonder & awe; he asks us to go forward and help build his kingdom. CCC 1285

In the Sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized person is “sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit” and is strengthened for service to the Body of Christ.

We are given these gifts to not only be of service others but to spread the Good News.

In the video below you will learn more about confirmation from acclaimed author and theologian Bishop Robert Barron. Francis Cardinal George describes Bishop Barron as “one of the Church’s best messengers.”
