Wedding at Cana

My Dear St. Bernadette Family,

Although this is the year we follow Luke’s gospel almost every Sunday, today we read from John. The church starts our “ordinary time” with the wedding at Cana. It is always helpful to ask why? What is there about this story that helps us get the year started on the right foot?

Perhaps we are to listen to Mary tell us to listen to her Son. Perhaps we are to be amazed as the hosts at the quality of God’s work, the new wine. Perhaps we are to see the real power of Christ? Perhaps we are to see that when Jesus throws a party he wants us all to have an amazing celebration (Mass)?

These many possible reasons give us reason to ponder. What exactly is Jesus saying to us today? Of course that is the question and our answer to it will be unique as each of us are unique and we are in a very different place than we were three years ago when last we heard this gospel.

With love,

Fr. Tom
