Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

My Dear St. Bernadette Family,

We know Jesus did not save us through might and power.  We know He in fact gave his life for us to save us and show us the way. Yet, we keep trying to be mighty, to succeed through power, to force the kingdom upon the world.

Of course we do. Look at the “heroes” in our society, from Mighty Mouse to Bruce Willis, they win through strength. The bad guy is overcome and to do good is won. This is the story of our society, but not the story of Christianity.

The disciples wanted to be the power beside the throne of Jesus. Jesus wanted them to “serve and give their life as a ransom for many.” This was so counter-intuitive for them that they failed to grasp it until after the Resurrection. It is for us today as well, but we have the Resurrection in clear view and so can place our trust in God. (Responsorial Psalm)

Let us be great by being the servant of all.

With love,

Fr. Tom
