Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time

My Dear St. Bernadette Family,

“Beware of the scribes” Jesus warns us in this weekend’s gospel. The scribes were responsible for transmitting the scriptures, the law. They wrote copies, they knew and recited the law, their teaching was an important part of the Jewish life. What Jesus warns us about is the scribes who thought it was all about them. They let their importance known to others and sought the praise and esteem of others.

The gospel condemnation of the scribes is linked with the poor widow putting two small coins in the treasury. For her, it was not about winning praise but giving to the Lord. She recognized that her gift had great value because it came from her heart.

Is my religion about me or about God? That is the question this weekend. Do I serve God or myself? The religion of the scribes was about their clothing, their power, their long prayers. The religion of the widow was about expressing gratitude to God, loving, living and giving sacrificially,

As you ponder your gift to God through church offertory, be aware that no matter how small it may seem, it is a beautiful expression of faithfulness and gratitude to God. Your gift is a sacrifice that shows you know it is not all about you, it is about our Father in heaven.

With love,

Fr. Tom
