The Baptism of the Lord

My Dear St. Bernadette Family,

Jesus’ baptism seems to have been a major turning point in his life. He moved from carpenter to Messiah. Luke tells us that Jesus heard a voice from heaven declaring that he is “my beloved Son.” This affirmation was the strength he needed to accomplish his mission on earth.

We have been baptized. Although perhaps you did not hear it, that same voice said the same message to you. You are my beloved child. Along with this affirmation, at baptism, we are given a family to walk with throughout life as we are admitted into the community of the church.

Baptism made a huge difference in Jesus’ life, how about us? Can we see clearly the implications of knowing we are precious in the sight of God, that we have a mission while here on earth, that we are never alone? How often do you think about your baptism? I know, most of you don’t remember the day, but by remembering the significance of Baptism, we can hear that wonderful voice again calling us into the intimate unity of God’s family.

With love,

Fr. Tom
