Pentecost

My Dear St. Bernadette Family,

So, when we pray for the Holy Spirit as we do today, what are we asking? What do we seek as a gift from the Holy Spirit? Why do we celebrate Pentecost as one of the greatest feasts of our church calendar?

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are: wisdom, counsel, knowledge, understanding, fortitude, piety and fear of the Lord. In the Gospel, Jesus associates the Holy Spirit with peace, with the forgiveness of sins and the mission of the church. We also celebrate this day as the birthday of the church.

Jesus’ promise in the gospel is that the Holy Spirit will teach us everything and remind us of all that Jesus told us. Putting this all together, the Holy Spirit teaches us who we are and why we do what we do. Without the Holy Spirit, we are likely to lose our way. We see what a great change the Holy Spirit effects in the apostles, let us pray for this same gift that we might be the church Jesus sends us to be.

With love,

Fr. Tom
