St. Kateri Tekakwitha

Feast of St. Kateri

My Dear St. Bernadette Family,

What fun to watch brothers and sisters in a family, sometimes best of friends and sometimes not getting along so well.  Today we see two sisters having a squabble.  I’m sure their brother, Lazarus, was drawn into this conflict once Jesus was out of ear shot.

Besides a lesson on listening, this gospel gives us an inside look at family life.  We can choose our friends, but not our family (most times).  Thus, family life forces us to learn to get along. Sometimes I, half jokingly, tell kids in Confession that if they learn to get along with their brother or sister, they can get along with anyone.

Certainly, learning this important lesson is essential before we head out into the working world. “Can’t we just get along” has been a plea for many as we apply family lessons to our brothers and sisters in the larger society.

But, where would we be without the Martha’s who does all the work and the Mary’s who does the listening?  Whichever one we most identify with, I’ll bet we have a brother or sister who is quite the opposite.  One of those people we love and hate at the same time.

May God help us be grateful for those who are like us and those who are not!

With love,

Fr. Tom
