My Dear St. Bernadette Family,

The celebration of the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord always includes the story of the arrival of the three wise men or kings or magi. They follow a star to find him.

The other readings take a different approach, they see the light being Jesus shining on a dark world. The irony of the light is that it reveals both the deeds of darkness and of light. That is, it shows us more clearly both the dangers and the path to follow.

In baptism, we give a lighted candle to the parents or newly baptized and say “receive the light of Christ.” I like to compare this light to a flashlight in a dark room. The first thing we do is shine the light down to see the danger of something we might trip over and then we shine it across the room to see where we wish to go. So too, the light of Christ helps us avoid the dangers and see the way.

The year ahead is a time to carry that torch and strain to see ahead guided by the light that is Christ. May this light keep us from going down the wrong path and show us the way Jesus invites us to travel.

With Love,

Fr. Tom
