My Dear St. Bernadette Family,

Our second reading today continues from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. It is a very familiar passage, often seen at weddings and funerals. “Love is patient, love is kind.” The gospel shows us how Jesus exemplifies this love from the very beginning. He had to be patient and kind to those people who not only didn’t listen to him because he was too close, but then tried to throw him off a cliff. We are told that he simply walked away.

Later Jesus will show us what real love looks like in his passion and resurrection. By going back and forth between the gospels and the rest of the scriptures (Old and New Testaments) we can see how Jesus is the fulfillment of the law and the prophets and come to greater clarity on the meaning of the rest of the books of the bible.

The virtues of Faith, Hope and Love are difficult to fully grasp. We often get confused with the “world’s” version of each of these, but Christian faith, hope and love are significantly different and require a lifetime to fully comprehend and live.  When Jesus, last week, speaks of the need to speak to the poor, he is including our poverty of understanding and ability to live these virtues. But, he assured us then and now that He has come to enlighten us.
With love,
Fr. Tom
