Fourth Sunday of Lent

My Dear St. Bernadette Family,

Each Sunday of Lent during this “B” Cycle of readings, we have an image of the Paschal Mystery. This week it is when the “Son of Man is lifted up” meaning the cross. Next week it will be the seed. All calling us to die to self and live for Him.

The image of the “Son of man lifted up” is offered by Christ in response to Nicodemus. Jesus refers to the serpent in the desert story when Moses was instructed to lift up a bronze serpent on a pole that God might bring healing for the people. The image then invites us to look up to Christ crucified for healing. This passage includes the often quoted “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son.”

In the end, it is the amazing love of God that heals. By now in our Lenten journey, we should have greater awareness of our need for healing. We hunger for a clean heart and turn to God to touch our heart with love. We look to Christ crucified for the strength to do the work of conversion.

Happy Lent!

With love,

Fr. Tom
