“Jesus” by Émile Munier 1891 – Public Domain

My Dear St. Bernadette Family,

There is an amazing insight in today’s gospel. Because the people lacked faith, Jesus could not perform any mighty deeds there. We can contrast this with the Alleluia verse, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor.”

Faith and trust in God is to allow grace to work through us. Lack of faith will not allow the grace of God to be effective. This is why we have seen so much good and bad in our world wrought by human deeds.

Let’s dwell on the positive. The Spirit of the Lord is given to all to proclaim glad tidings to the poor. This is our commission, this is our joy and gift. “Poor” here not just speaking about financial position, but the many ways people are poor, including poverty of faith.

Our opening prayer (Collect) says it beautifully, “O God, who in the abasement of your Son have raised up a fallen world, fill your faithful with holy joy, for on those you have rescued from slavery to sin you bestow eternal gladness.”

Trusting in God, let us know that eternal gladness in our own lives and share it with others as holy joy.

With love,

Fr. Tom
