First Sunday of Advent

My Dear St. Bernadette Family,

Advent is a season rich with symbols. We see many in our readings for this First Sunday of Advent. One that strikes me is the image of climbing the mountain of the Lord.  In both Old and New Testaments, the mountain top is the meeting place with God.  From Abraham and Moses to the apostles, the climb up the mountain was a purifying time, preparing for the encounter.  So in Advent we climb.

It is not easy to climb a mountain and in the steeper terrain we need help and must work as a team.  This too is an image of Advent. Not easy work and not a solo climb.

In mountain climbing there are many false summits.  You climb and work to get to the top you see only then to realize the mountain is even taller and there is still more work to be done.

Any time I have climbed, I have been tempted to stop and go back down.  It was harder than I had bargained for.  But, the encounter from the top, the view is worth the climb. Let us climb the mountain of the Lord together this Advent.

With Love,

Fr. Tom
