Ascension of the Lord

My Dear St. Bernadette Family,

In Mark’s gospel this weekend, we have what is called “The Great Commission.” Jesus sending the apostles, the church, to proclaim the gospel to every creature. This was what they did then and what we are called to do today.

As you know, we proclaim the gospel in many ways. We work through the church to do so formally during prayer, community and the continuing teaching of the apostles. We also do so in informal ways such as how we live, how we treat people and (from last week) the joy we know and share with all.

I am reminded of a true story of a man who decided he was going to join a church, but he didn’t know which to join. It happened in his city that there was a corner with three churches on it, so one Sunday morning he stood on the corner and watched people leaving church. Some were in a hurry, some angry over the busy traffic leaving the parking lot, but out of one of the churches were coming people with joy on their faces and in their conversations. Yep, that is the church he joined.

Let us spread the good news, the gospel, with joy!

With love,
Fr. Tom
