My Dear St. Bernadette Family,

The story of the ten lepers is a clear expression of the need to develop and attitude of gratitude. Thanks is the first prayer, our first response to God. Without gratitude in our heart, our prayers and actions become askew. Without gratitude we tend towards selfishness, greed and self serving. All of these prevent us from having a right relationship with God, our neighbor or God’s gifts including life itself and the blessings from the earth.

There are many ways of expressing gratitude to God. Prayer of course, but also through generosity, caring, and tithing. In all these ways, we give back to God from what God gives to us. The importance of this is seen in one of the earlier stories of the scriptures, the story of Cain and Abel. This story invites us to give back from the best of what we have, to give first and not the left overs. The willingness to do so is a wonderful measure of our heart and our faith.

Faith and love give. God who is love, gives us life and all else. We who are made in the image and likeness of God must also give generously and out of gratitude. Without gratitude we cannot love. Each day should include an inventory of thanksgiving. We are greatly blessed. Let us return to give God thanks through lives poured out in love.

With love,

Fr. Tom
