25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

My Dear St. Bernadette Family,

One of people’s favorite pastimes is solving problems. These can be in the form of puzzles, mysteries or just why the vacuum is not working right. We love to find clever ways of doing things such as getting the last ketchup out of the bottle or repairing a door hinge. Doing such activities we are told keeps our mind alert and the ability to do so separates us from most of the animals.

In the gospel story today, Jesus commends the steward who uses his brains to protect his job. He is praised for his prudence. So, it should be with us using our brain to solve spiritual problems. From solving hungry children to fixing family life and love to healing a church which has suffered some terrible experiences, we are to use our energy, smarts and ability to work to solve many problems. We have the ability now, Jesus tells us, let’s accept the responsibility and make things right.

Problems we face could include: daydreaming during Mass, having a falling out with a neighbor, needing to work on Sunday morning, encountering a “signer” on the street corner. Let’s stop and think, stop and pray and then find within ourselves the ability to solve the problems we face. Let’s not just use our intelligence for personal gain, but to gain our place in the Kingdom of God.

With love,

Fr. Tom
