22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

My Dear St. Bernadette Family,

“For what great nation is there that has gods so close to it as the Lord, our God, is to us?”

This quote from our first reading this Sunday, the book of Deuteronomy, gives us a great lesson on evangelization. Moses is telling that “other” people will look at Israel and be jealous. Being jealous they will want what Israel has, namely its relationship to God, and want that for themselves.

This has not changed. What a wonderful gift we have, our relationship with God that we affirm and renew at the altar with every Mass. This covenant is precious for us and should be the object of jealousy for our neighbors. Is it? If they are not looking at us and asking about this core of our life, then perhaps we are not showing how special God is to us.

Perhaps we are not enjoying that relationship in our own life. Perhaps, as Moses warns the people, we have not followed God’s commands. Or, in the warning from Jesus in the gospel, we are honoring God with our lips not with our hearts.

Perhaps the greatest proof of our right relationship with God will be the joy in our heart. A joy that is not dependent on our material comfort, our good fortunes, or other externals, but a joy that wells up within us when we know the closeness of our God. This joy cannot be hidden, (why would we want to) but will be seen by others and, we hope, make them
jealous.

With love,
Fr. Tom
