20th Sunday of Ordinary Time

My Dear St. Bernadette Family,

“I have come to set the earth on fire” Jesus tells us in our gospel. Wouldn’t it be great if His gospel was spread, like a raging fire, across the earth. Imagine people embracing the love of God and turning to brother and sister with care and compassion. What a different planet this would be.

So, why do we not see the Word inflame the world? Jesus addresses this too. The cost of following Him can be great. We’d need to set aside our own agenda and embrace the cross. We’d need to be willing to accept others criticism and perhaps worse.

I cannot do that for anyone else. But I can do it for me. I can decide to care for my brother and sister not dependent on their deserving my favor, but because I can and Jesus told me to do so. We can change the whole world, starting with me, myself and I. Then others will catch on and a small ember of one can become a raging fire to cleanse the earth. Let us pray and act.

With Love,
Fr. Tom.
