19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

My Dear St. Bernadette Family,

Jesus teaches us in our gospel today to be a servant, a good servant. We are to be ready to serve at all times, looking for opportunities to serve God through our service to our brothers and sisters. I find the identity as “servant of God” to be helpful as I examine my life.

A good server at a restaurant is amazing to watch. They seem to know how much to be present and how and when to be absent. They are attentive to the needs of their patrons, but do not hover nor intrude in the people’s space. They know their job and they know the people.

For we who aspire to be servants of God, it is important that we know our job and know our people. We work to anticipate their needs and seek to know the will of God. Through our relationship with God and with people, we grow in the ability to serve.

Perhaps this summer we could ponder how we have the opportunity to serve our God and serve our brothers and sisters. How can we be an instrument of God’s love and care, especially to the “least” of our brothers and sisters?

With love,
Fr. Tom
