18th Sunday of Ordinary Time

My Dear St. Bernadette Family,

While visiting nursing homes, I often observe that some of the people are happy while others quite miserable. I ponder why? They are all in seemingly the same place, same food, same attendants. I look at their room (often half room) and the few possessions they have with them.

It seems, based on observation and on the teaching we find in our readings this weekend, that possessions are not what makes us happy. The happiest people I find have two possessions. Pictures and a rosary. That is, they have people who love them and prayer, a relationship with God who loves them.

While modern conveniences are nice, (I rely on my cell phone and car a lot), they are a convenience, not a source of joy. This helps us focus on what is important and this means building those relationships that are eternal. Time spent with family, time spent with God, meals together, Eucharistic adoration, letters to those far away or a phone call, pondering the wisdom in the Bible, playing with children, all these investments that will return joy, comfort, love and peace.

With love,

Fr. Tom
