15th Sunday in Ordinary Time

My Dear St. Bernadette Family,

It is easy to justify inaction. We have a million excuses to not do something. Further, we will only act reluctantly if we are simply following a command to act. This is what makes today’s gospel so important. The “Good Samaritan” acted and he was motivated by his heart. He didn’t stop to ponder if he had to help. He didn’t list in his head the possible excuses (as did the priest and Levite). He just acted with love and care for another human being in trouble.

The story is to illustrate the essential connection between the two laws Jesus gives us. Love of God is only found in love of neighbor. It is the only way to do it. We might try to substitute religious practices, symbols of adoration, rituals of sacrifice. But, only in actually living our faith in love of our neighbor (everyone) do we actually love our God.

The Samaritan knew this at a deep level. It wasn’t an understanding but something deep in his soul. It was simply who he was, how he lived. This being the fruit of a lifetime of prayer, reading the Scripture and probably the example taught to him by his parents. As James says, let us love in deed not only in words.

With love,

Father Tom
